If a storm took your fence down, take pictures before you touch anything, make sure a pool or a pet is not left open to the street, and then phone your insurer and a fence company.
Half my fence blew down. Who can fix it fast and what will it cost?
Text us a photo and tell us roughly how many feet are down. National 2026 figures put a fallen section with broken posts at $900 to $2,500 as a major repair, and a long run costs more. Timing depends on the storm. A local thunderstorm leaves crews free. A hurricane fills every schedule in Broward County for weeks and thins out material stocks, so call as soon as it is safe.
My dogs are in the yard and the fence is open to the road. What can be done right away?
The gap can be shut the same visit with a temporary panel tied to braced posts, and the real repair can follow. Mention the dogs when you call. Mention a pool too. An unfenced pool is the more urgent of the two, and we schedule those ahead of other work.
Is there an extra charge for emergency or weekend fence repair?
With many companies, yes, and some will not come out after hours at all. It is a fair question to ask on the phone. The lower-cost path is usually a short visit to close the opening, followed by the full repair during the normal week.
Does homeowners insurance cover a fence knocked down by a storm or a tree?
Sometimes. Fences generally fall under the part of a policy that covers other structures. In Florida the details vary a great deal: wind and hurricane damage may carry its own deductible, and that deductible can be far larger than the regular one. For a short run of fence, the repair may come in under it. Your agent or insurer has the final word. We provide a written, itemized estimate for the claim.
My neighbor's tree fell on my fence. Whose insurance pays?
Normally your own policy covers your own fence, wherever the tree was rooted. A tree that was clearly dead, or one the neighbor had been told was dangerous, may change that, and the insurers sort it out. Meanwhile we can rebuild only the crushed sections if the same style is still available.
The insurer offered much less than the repair quote because the fence is old. Now what?
Request the adjuster's figures in writing. A policy may pay only what an aged fence was worth, with depreciation taken off, and not the price to build it new. Reply with an itemized estimate and ask which lines were reduced and why. If the number stays low, fixing only the storm-damaged sections is a reasonable fallback.
The storm knocked the fence down and my neighbor says it is mine. Who pays?
The owner of the fence, which normally means the owner of the ground under it. We know of no Florida statute that splits the cost of a boundary fence between two homeowners. If nobody is sure whose side it was on, a licensed surveyor can settle that, and a fence company cannot. Neighbors who both want it rebuilt on the line can agree to share the bill. Our page on shared fences in Florida has more.
Can a fence be built to survive a hurricane?
No fence is guaranteed to survive one, but some do much better. Wind slips through open pickets and chain link. A solid panel takes the whole push, so it depends on larger posts and footings. Broward County is in the Florida Building Code's high-velocity hurricane zone, and building departments here review fences with that in mind. Take down windscreen and loose slats before a named storm if you can.
